PeeWee Challenge

Merging the best horsemanship practices from
eventing, equitation, Pony Club and more

​The Competition
  • Phase 1 - Equipment inspection
    • Riders will be inspected with regards to their turnout safety and cleanliness. They will also be asked a question from the question bank provided in the prize list. 
    • Scoring for PHASE 1 will be as follows:
      • Cleanliness - 10 points
      • Safety - 10 points
      • Horsemanship question - 10 points
  • Phase 2 - Flat work 
    • Riders will be judged on a ‘test’ appropriate to the level (Tests listed in Prize List). Similar to a dressage test, each movement will be scored in relation to how well it is executed. Collective scores will be included for: Harmony between horse and rider; Confidence; Rider’s position; Overall test execution
    • Scoring for PHASE 2 will be as follows:
      • Each movement will be given a score out of 10
      • Each collective mark will be given a score out of 10
      • Each given score will be added to find the total
      • Go off course will result in a 5 point deduction for each infraction
  • Phase 3 - Arena Jumping
    • Riders will be judged over a jump course appropriate to the level. Course may include technical aspects like a halt or trot fence. The round will be penalized for too fast or too slow times and any jump faults. There will also be collected scores for the following: Riders position; Effective riding (appropriate use of lines and corners, control, etc…); Technical aspect execution; Overall course execution
    • Scoring for PHASE 3 will be as follows: 
      • Timing: 10 points given if rider is within 10 seconds (fast or slow) of optimum time; 5 points given if rider is within 10-15 seconds (faster or slower) of optimum time; 0 Points given if rider is outside of 15 seconds (faster or slower) of optimum time. 
      • Jump Faults: 10 points will be given for a clear round; 3 points will be deducted for every rail pulled. 
      • Collective marks: a maximum of 10 points will be given for each of the collective marks
  • Phase 4 - Riding in the Open
    • Riders will be judged over a course appropriate for the level. Course may include technical aspects like a transition, hills, etc.. The round will be judged on time, jump faults, and collective scores: Rider’s position; Effective riding; Technical aspect execution; Overall course execution.
    • Scoring for PHASE 4 will be as follows: 
      • Timing: 10 points given if rider is within 10 seconds (fast or slow) of optimum time; 5 points given if rider is within 10-15 seconds (faster or slower) of optimum time; 0 Points given if rider is outside of 15 seconds (faster or slower) of optimum time. 
      • Jump Faults: 10 points will be given for a clear round; 4 points will be deducted for every fence disobedience.
      • Collective marks: a maximum of 10 points will be given for each of the collective marks
  • The show staff has the right to eliminate a rider if there is a concern for safety. 

Purpose: To combine elements of eventing, equitation, and USPC to create a competition where the next generation of riders will be tested on their skill on the flat, in the jump ring, and riding in the open. ​

Competition Levels
  • Assisted Poles - Can have a adult (Over age 18) lead
    • Flatwork Test: Halt; Walk; 2 short trots; circles; changes of direction
    • Arena Jumping: poles on the ground; walk; trot; demonstrate 2 point (not timed)
    • Riding in the open: Poles on the ground; walk; trot; navigating terrain (not timed)
  • Poles
    • Flatwork Test: Halt; Walk; 2 short trots; circles; changes of direction
    • Arena Jumping: poles on the ground; walk; trot; demonstrate 2 point (not timed)
    • Riding in the open: Poles on the ground; walk; trot; navigating terrain (not timed)
  • Cross Rails
    • Flatwork Test: Halt; Walk; Slow trot; faster trot; circles, changes of direction
    • Arena Jumping: 18” cross rails; walk transition; trot; cantering allowed but not required; jump speed _________
    • Riding in the open: 18” height solid obstacles; walk; trot; navigating terrain; jump speed ______ 
  • 2’
    • Flatwork Test: Halt; Walk; Slow trot; faster trot; canter; reinback; circles; changes of direction
    • Arena Jumping: 2’ (no oxers); walk transition; trot; cantering allowed but not required; jump speed _________
    • Riding in the open: 2’  height solid obstacles; walk; trot; cantering allowed but not required; navigating terrain; jump speed ______ 
  • 2’6"
    • Flatwork Test: Halt; Walk; Slow trot; faster trot; canter; reinback; circles; changes of direction
    • Arena Jumping: 2’6’; walk transition; trot jump; jump speed _________
    • Riding in the open: 2’6’  height solid obstacles; walk; trot; cantering; navigating terrain; jump speed ______ 

Awards
  • 1-6th Place ribbons 
  • Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
  • Team competition - awards

Rules
  • Riders must be 13 or under. Age is determined by age on January 1st 
  • Management and staff reserves the right to eliminate riders based on safety concerns
  • Apparel - English style tack, ASTM Helmet, and safety vest for at least the ‘riding in the open’ phase required. 
  • Classes divided by height. Further division by age will occur if warranted by # of entries.
